Did you know that Saturday, September 21st is Museum Day? An annual event sponsored by Smithsonian Magazine, Museum Day seeks to celebrate and promote “boundless curiosity” with free entry to select museums all over the country. A list of participating Georgia museums can be found on the official Smithsonian Magazine website, along with details on how to request your ticket for September 21st!
And for those of you that are not able to make it out to one of these museums on the 21st, take a glance below! I’ve compiled a vast list of local Atlanta museums and exhibits that provide free entry to guests all year round!
David J. Spencer CDC Museum: Get an inside look at the history of the CDC and how their leading scientists are fight mystery diseases. New exhibits are offered throughout the year, and though the museum is free and open to the public, they do periodically close to accommodate setup of new displays. Check the website for up-to-date information on exhibit hours, and take note that a valid government I.D. is required for entry.
State Capitol and Governor’s Mansion: Both the State Capitol and the Governor’s Mansion are open to the public for free tours. The Capitol is open Monday through Friday, while the Governor’s Mansion is open at select times on Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Due to special hours for holidays and government events, they recommend viewing their website or contacting them directly to ensure tours are available on your requested day.
Waffle House: This unique museum takes you back in time to 1955 and lets you experience firsthand the wonder and nostalgia of Waffle House. Located in Avondale Estates at the original Waffle House, free tours are given on Wednesdays by appointment only.
Atlanta Monetary Museum: From the history of money to a tour of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and their cash-processing operations, the Atlanta Monetary Museum provides a one-of-a-kind lesson on the role of the Federal Reserve in our nation’s economy. Both guided and self-guided tours are available throughout the week. All tours are free, but valid government I.D. is required.
Atlanta Contemporary Art Museum: Located in the West End area of Atlanta, this museum promotes the creation and appreciation of contemporary art. Free admission is offered daily, and in addition to exhibits and events, the museum is home to numerous educational and community programs.
Marietta Fire Museum: Both young and old will enjoy this museum! Located a few blocks from Marietta Square, the Marietta Fire Museum showcases a vast display of antique fire apparatus, tools, and gear. Doors are open Monday through Friday for self-guided tours, while firefighter lead tours are available by appointment only. All tours are free!
The King Center: As the birthplace of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Atlanta has the great honor and privilege of being home to the King Center. Serving as a living memorial to Dr. King, the King Center is dedicated to educating the world on the life, legacy and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., inspiring new generations to carry forward his unfinished work, strengthen causes and empower change-makers who are continuing his efforts today. Admission is always free for all parts of the King Center and reservations are not required. However, you must register to tour the Birth Home of Dr. King, as space is limited. A true treasure of our city, this is a museum everyone must see!
