Out of town travel spikes between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, and with it so can the number of package thefts and home burglaries. Don’t let your home fall victim to the theft of the holiday season, put into place these three simple tips to keep your home safe and secure.

Tell a Trusted Neighbor: Ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your home while you will be away. Let them know where you will be, how long you expect to be gone, and how they can contact you if needed. Have them check your mail, take out/in your trash, pick up newspapers and flyers, and be on the lookout for any packages or special deliveries.

Keep the Lights On: Create the illusion that someone is home by setting multiple light timers throughout the house. Remember to alternate the on/off time of each timer to create a more authentic look. Or better yet, use smart light bulbs to manage your home’s lighting from anywhere in the world via an app on your phone. If you don’t already have one, consider an audio/video door bell so you can also monitor front door activity remotely.

Do a Home Walk-Through: Prior to heading out on your holiday travels, do a thorough security walk-through of your house. Verify that all windows, doors, and entryways are locked and secure. Trim bushes and shrubs around your home, especially near windows. Lastly, make sure all outside lights are functional and set to turn on at dusk.
