Summer Safety Tips

As you head out to the pool or lake this summer, keep these basic safety tips in mind.

Beat the heat: Heat cramps, exhaustion, and stroke are very real health dangers in the hot days of summer. If possible, avoid venturing outside all together during the high afternoon temperatures of summer, and instead schedule outdoor activities in the morning or evening. When you are outside, wear cool, light fitting clothing and be diligent about hydrating with both water and  sports drinks.

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen: Use a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, water-resistance, and SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreen should be applied 15 minutes prior to sun exposure to allow your skin to properly absorb the lotion. Make sure you get all areas of your body that will be exposed – including your head/hairline, ears, feet, etc. And don’t forget to reapply the sunscreen every 2 hours and immediately after swimming.

Swim Safely: Swimming in a pool is very different from swimming in a lake, river, or ocean, and therefore it is important to make sure the skill of a swimmer matches the body of water they are swimming in. And remember, swimming is a skill that requires lots of practice and experience, so never assume that a person may be a strong swimmer just because they know the basics of swimming.

Stay Alert: When around water, children should always be under the close watch of an adult – whether a lifeguard is on duty or not. A lot can happen in just a few short seconds, so it is important the supervising adult is able to avoid distractions and give their full, undivided attention to the kids.

Don’t just pack it – wear your life jacket!: When it comes to boating and other water sports, life jackets need to be worn by children and adults at all times. Learn more about boating safety here.
