Small Space Gardening Tips
Pam Gebhardt & Leslie Tomasini ,
With some creativity and careful planning, your small outdoor space can be transformed into the garden of your dreams.
Stick with Simplicity: Complicated designs and over-planting can make small gardens feel even smaller. Keep it simple instead, strategically adding elements over time to avoid overcrowding. Start with planting items you absolutely love, and only add additional plants once you know you have the room for them.
Plant for Growth: As for plant size, remember to factor in final dimensions when deciding on garden elements. Leave room for growth when planting, filling empty space with annuals in the interim if necessary.
Grow Up: Utilize vertical space to extend your garden’s reach. For example, use shelves or hanging baskets to elevate plants or incorporate vines on lattices and trellises. Pegboards with mounted pots can turn a blank wall into a lush green feature.
Direct the Eye: For added visual interest, include a focal point or design the garden around a central item. This could be as simple as a favorite plant or flower, or a hardscape item like a small fountain, bench, or statue.
Shed Some Light: Allow your garden to shine both day and night with well-placed outdoor lighting. Not only will the lighting further highlight your garden’s overall design, it will allow you to enjoy the beauty of your garden in the evening hours.
