Winter Home Prep: Get Your North Atlanta Home Ready for the Cold
Winter is here, and if you’ve lived in North Atlanta for any length of time, you know that “winter” can be unpredictable. It can range from 65 degrees and sunny to waking up to a sheet of ice overnight.
While we may not get a lot of snow, those occasional freezing temperatures can cause significant problems for homeowners. A little preparation now can help you avoid frozen pipes, water damage, a chilly house, and a costly repair bill later.

Before the next cold snap arrives, here’s my North Atlanta winter home checklist. Some of these tasks only take a few minutes, but they can make a big difference.
1. Clean Those Gutters: If you haven’t cleaned your gutters since the leaves started falling, now is the time. Gutters full of leaves and debris can prevent water from draining properly away from your roof and foundation. When temperatures drop, that water can freeze, creating additional weight and potentially causing damage around the roofline. Make sure downspouts are clear and directing water away from your foundation. While you’re at it, check around your home for standing water or areas where drainage seems inadequate.
2. Stop the Drafts: Want to make your house feel warmer without immediately turning up the thermostat? Find the drafts! Check around exterior doors and windows for gaps or worn weatherstripping. A little caulk or a new door sweep can make a surprisingly big difference. Don’t forget the less obvious places. Your attic, crawlspace, basement, and garage can all contribute to heat loss. If your home feels unusually chilly even when the heat is running, it may be worth having your insulation checked.
3. Protect Your Pipes: This is the big one for Georgia homeowners. Before a hard freeze, disconnect garden hoses and make sure exterior faucets are properly drained and shut off if your plumbing system allows it.
When temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for an extended period, open cabinet doors beneath sinks located along exterior walls. This allows warmer household air to circulate around the pipes.
If necessary, let a small amount of water drip from vulnerable faucets. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the location of your home’s main water shutoff. Trust me, you don’t want to be searching for it while water is spraying across the laundry room!
4. Give Your Heating System Some Attention
Your furnace or HVAC system tends to capture everyone’s attention when it malfunctions. However, a little preventative maintenance is much more pleasant.
Replace your HVAC filter and ensure that vents and returns aren’t obstructed by furniture, rugs, or holiday decorations. If your system hasn’t been serviced recently, consider scheduling a professional inspection.
Furthermore, if you use space heaters, provide them with ample space. Keep them away from curtains, bedding, and furniture, and never leave one running unattended.
5. Check the Fireplace and Chimney
There’s nothing quite like a cozy fire on a chilly winter evening. However, fireplaces require some attention before you light that first log.
Regularly inspect and clean your chimney, especially if you use your fireplace frequently. Creosote buildup can increase the risk of a chimney fire, while ventilation issues can create hazardous indoor air conditions.
Additionally, if you have a gas fireplace, ensure it’s operating properly before winter arrives.
6. Prepare for a Georgia-Style Snow Day
We all recall the chaos that ensues when Atlanta experiences even a light snowfall or ice. Suddenly, essentials like bread, milk, and batteries become the most sought-after commodities in town!
While you don’t need to build a bunker, it’s wise to have a small emergency supply at home.
Stock up on non-perishable food, bottled water, flashlights, batteries, portable phone chargers, and basic medications. If the power goes out, you’ll be grateful for your proactive planning.
It’s also a great opportunity to ensure that everyone in the family is aware of the location of the flashlights. After all, it’s quite common for people to forget where they are when they actually need them.
7. Don’t Forget Your Car
Your house isn’t the only thing that requires a winter checkup.
Keep your gas tank at least half full when freezing weather is anticipated. Additionally, make sure your car’s emergency kit includes blankets, water, a phone charger, an ice scraper, and essential roadside supplies.
Don’t forget to check your tire pressure as well. Cold temperatures can cause tire pressure to decrease.
A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way
While winter weather in North Georgia can be unpredictable, preparing your home doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task.
Although a clean gutter, protected pipes, or a properly maintained HVAC system may not be the most exciting tasks on your weekend to-do list, taking care of these things now can prevent significant problems later on.
So, grab your checklist, spend a Saturday morning getting your home ready, and then relax with a warm cup of coffee.
We hope that winter treats us kindly and that the only snow we encounter this year is the kind that enhances the beauty of our neighborhood for a few hours.
Wishing you all warmth and enjoyment during this season from all of us at North Atlanta Home Group!
