Since its debut in 1992, Atlanta’s Georgia Dome has hosted thousands of events – including 2 Super Bowls, 199 Falcons games, 7 Falcons playoff games, 3 Final Fours, numerous college football games, as well as Olympic basketball and gymnastics. And this Monday, November 20th at 7:30 a.m., the Dome’s history will come to an end with a massive implosion.
To the disappointment of many, there will be no public viewing spot for the implosion. In fact, officials are blocking off all areas surrounding the Dome for safety – leaving very few options for in-person viewing. The Sun Dial restaurant on top of the Westin Peachtree Plaza is hosting a viewing party, but there is a $50 admission fee and reservations are limited (call 404-589-7506 to learn more).
Therefore, the best viewing spot will likely be from the comfort of your own home (or office). WSB-TV will air live coverage on TV as well as on their online media sites. For a complete viewing list, click here.
And if you will be commuting Monday morning, don’t forget that the roads and Marta stations in the area will be shut down. The AJC lists the following roads will be closed from 5:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.:
• Andrew Young International Blvd from Philips Drive to Centennial Pkwy NW
• Phillips Drive from Centennial Pkwy NW to Andrew Young International Blvd NW
• Magnum St NW from MLK Jr Drive to Marietta St NW
• Northside Drive from MLK Drive NW to Joseph E Boone Blvd NW
• Maple St NW from MLK Drive NW to Northside Drive NW
• Electric Ave NW from Maple St NW to Spencer St NW
• Postell Street NW from Maple St NW to Rhodes St NW
• Rhodes St NW from Electric Ave NW to Northside Drive NW
• Magnolia St NW from Electric St NW to Northside Drive NW
• Thurmond St NW from Electric Ave NW to Northside Drive NW
Marta announced that all stations west of Five Points will be impacted, with no rail service for the following stations: H.E. Holmes, Bankhead, West Lake, Ashby, Vine City, and Dome/GWCC/Philips Arena/CNN Center.
